Send Push Notification/Nudge to Assignees

Is it possible to send push notifications/reminders to the assignees or is it only done automatically by the system and depends on the individual settings? for example, I click on the step in the workflow and send a push notification. it would be nice to have this implemented if that's not already possible. alternatively, we have to send an email with the link to the task as a reminder (which is not ideal).
